How to Fix a Flat Tire

DIY Car Care: Replacing a Flat Tire

Getting a flat tire on the road is bound to happen every once and a while. You could spend a few hours waiting on roadside assistance or you could handle the problem yourself. Changing a tire isn't as complicated as it seems and, once you've done it a few times, it's relatively easy. Here's a quick guide to changing a flat tire.

  1. Find a spot to pull over. Try to aim for straight patches of road as opposed to exit ramps and curves. Once parked, turn on your hazard lights then remove the jack, wrench, and spare tire.
  2. Loosen the tire's lug nuts with the wrench but don't remove them.
  3. Place the jack beneath the car. Check your owner's manual for locations. Once in place, jack up the car until it sits half a foot above the ground.
  4. Remove the lug nuts and take the tire off the car by pulling it straight out.
  5. Put the spare tire in its place by lining up the lug nut posts with the holes in the spare. Push it in.
  6. Put the lug nuts back on the tire and tighten them until they can't go any further.
  7. Lower the car and tighten the lug nuts even more.
  8. Put the flat tire and tools back in your truck.
